Why Contaminated Scrap Can Devalue Turnings
When collecting nickel alloy turnings of one spec it is very important to make sure they do not get mixed in with nickel alloy turnings of a different spec.  Even a small contamination of a different alloy can significantly devalue the scrap price of turnings.  Take for example, a machine shop collection Incoloy 800 (32% Ni 0% Mo) that accidentally mixes in scrap turnings of Hastelloy B (62% Ni 28% Mo).  The scrap yard will not be able to sell the Incoloy 800 as Incoloy 800 because the scrap turnings have a few percentage units of Mo.  This small contamination of Mo considerably devalues the scrap turnings.
