The price of turnings are less valuable to scrap yards than solids for two main reasons.  First, unlike solids, turnings must be degreased to identify the exact weight of the metal. Second, scrap yards must crush and mix the turnings in order to determine the exact chemistry of the turnings.  Consequently, degreasing and crushing and mixing add extra costs to dealing with turnings.
